We are Proud to support Spectacled Bear Conservation Charity’s Vital work in GPS Collaring Spectacled Bears in Peru

26th Aug 2026

We’re proud to share an exciting update from our conservation partners at Spectacled Bear Conservation (SBC) in Peru. Following our latest donation to SBC, we’ve received the wonderful news that our support will fund another GPS collar for a wild spectacled bear.

The news comes as SBC’s field team continues its important work in and around Machu Picchu, learning more about the spectacled bears living in the area. SBC has told us that, since the beginning of June, its field team has successfully fitted three more spectacled bears with GPS collars.

GPS collars allow conservationists to track the movements of individual bears. SBC’s work in Machu Picchu is helping researchers identify important areas used by the bears, including feeding and breeding grounds. The new collar funded by Noah’s Ark will help SBC continue building its understanding of these animals and the habitat they depend on. SBC began its GPS collaring work in Machu Picchu in 2024, when the first two bears in the area were fitted with collars. The information gathered through the project is being used alongside camera trap footage to build a better understanding of the bears and how they use the landscape.

Alongside the collaring programme, the team has continued collecting important information about the bears’ key food sources and how they use their habitat in and around Machu Picchu.

Spectacled bears, also known as Andean bears, are the only bear species found in South America. SBC works to understand and protect the species and its habitat, including through scientific research and conservation work around Machu Picchu.

At Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm, we’re proud to support conservation work that helps protect animals in the wild. Our partnership with SBC means that our support can contribute directly to research taking place thousands of miles away, helping conservationists gather information that can be used to better understand and protect wild spectacled bears.

We’re incredibly grateful to the SBC team for sharing this latest update and for the dedication they continue to show in the field. We can’t wait to hear more about the bears that will receive the next GPS collar and to follow the research that it will help make possible. A huge thank you to Spectacled Bear Conservation for their continued work to safeguard spectacled bears in the wild, and for enabling us to play a part in this important conservation programme.
