We Care & Protect

We have a primary duty to care and protect all the wonderful creatures who live at our zoo

What we are doing

  1. ShakaAfricanElephant

Continually improving animal care and welfare

We place animal care at the heart of everything we do, maintaining high standards across the zoo while actively identifying opportunities to improve. By working closely with wider zoo community and animal care networks, we share knowledge, learn from others and continually strive for best practice in animal husbandry, welfare and conservation.

    Developing our animal collection

We carefully review the animals, habitats and conservation programmes at Noah’s Ark to make sure our collection continues to inspire, educate and make a meaningful difference for wildlife. This includes developing new habitats, introducing species with strong conservation and education value, and thoughtfully phasing out some species where appropriate. As part of this journey, we are working towards becoming full members of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA), helping us strengthen our role within the wider zoo community.

    Increasing our conservation impact

We are growing our conservation impact by supporting wildlife projects both locally and around the world, with a particular focus on endangered species and inspiring our visitors to take positive action for nature. Through international conservation partnerships, we help protect species and habitats beyond the zoo, while here at Noah’s Ark we are also developing native wildlife conservation projects aligned with BIAZA initiatives including 'Project Dung' and the 'Where's Harvey?' harvest mouse campaign.

We work with conservation partners who support local communities to protect their local wildlife and habitats, helping people connect with the nature on their doorstep and feel empowered to protect it. Through education, storytelling and engaging visitor experiences, we aim to show how everyone can play a part in protecting wildlife; from global species at risk to the native species and habitats found here in the UK.

    Leading the way on sustainability

We are working to make Noah’s Ark a more sustainable place for wildlife, people and the planet, embedding environmental responsibility into the way we care for our animals, welcome visitors and manage our site.

From using more local and sustainable food sources to strengthening our recycling programmes, we are taking practical steps to reduce our impact and make sustainability part of everyday life at Noah’s Ark. Building on the insights from our carbon survey, we continue to look for ways to improve our impact on the planet. Over the longer term, we aim to develop clearer visitor interpretation, increase renewable power sources and improve water sustainability; helping us care for the natural world in practical and meaningful ways.
