Sutton's Birthday Bash!

5th May 2026

Today we celebrated Sutton and his big day with a very special birthday surprise! Keepers treated him to a feast of fresh browse, tasty treats and plenty of enrichment to keep him busy throughout the day. From pulling apart enrichment parcels to exploring his favourite snacks, Sutton certainly enjoyed being the centre of attention.

Sutton was born in 2014 at West Midlands Safari Park and made history as the first successful elephant calf in the world born through artificial insemination using semen from a wild bull. His birth was an important milestone for elephant conservation and breeding programmes across Europe.

Joining Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm in 2023, Sutton is the youngest member of our elephant herd and has quickly become known for his playful and cheeky personality. Whether he’s investigating new enrichment, splashing in the pool or keeping the older elephants on their toes, Sutton is always full of character and curiosity.

African elephants are currently listed as Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In the wild, elephant populations face growing threats from habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict and poaching. That’s why coordinated conservation breeding programmes in modern zoos play such an important role in helping to safeguard the future of this incredible species, while also raising awareness and supporting conservation projects around the world.

Birthdays are also a great opportunity for our animal team to provide extra enrichment, encouraging natural behaviours such as foraging, problem-solving and exploration - all important parts of elephant care and welfare.

Happy Birthday, Sutton! We hope you had a fantastic day celebrating with the herd. 💚🐘
