Celebrating International Tiger Day
28th Jul 2026
Every year on 29th July, International Tiger Day raises awareness of one of the world's most iconic animals and the challenges they continue to face in the wild. It is a chance to celebrate this incredible species while highlighting the importance of protecting them for future generations.
Tigers are the largest members of the cat family and are native to Asia. They have a powerful, muscular body, large paws, a long tail and orange fur with distinctive black stripes. In fact, no two tigers have the same stripe pattern - each one is completely unique, just like a human fingerprint!
Sadly, tigers are listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Just over a century ago, they could be found across much of central, eastern and southern Asia. Today, they have lost more than 93 per cent of their historic range and survive only in scattered populations across 13 countries, including India, parts of Southeast Asia, Sumatra, China and the Russian Far East.
Three tiger subspecies - the Caspian, Javan and Bali Tigers - are already extinct, while the South China Tiger has not been observed for many years. As Aqua is a rescue tiger, we don't know his exact subspecies.
The greatest threats facing wild tigers are poaching, the illegal wildlife trade, habitat loss and the decline of their natural prey. Over the past century, tiger numbers have fallen dramatically from around 100,000 individuals to an estimated 5,000 in the wild, making conservation efforts more important than ever.
In October 2025, rescue tiger Aqua safely arrived at his forever home here at Noah's Ark Zoo Farm. His journey began in 2019 when he was one of ten tigers rescued from appalling conditions at the Poland-Belarus border after being trafficked across Europe.
Since arriving at Noah's Ark, Aqua has been settling into his new home and continuing his recovery under the dedicated care of our expert animal team. Every day, he grows in confidence while enjoying a safe environment, a specialist diet and enrichment designed to encourage his natural behaviours.
While Aqua is now safe, his journey doesn't end there. We are continuing to fundraise through Aqua's Rescue Tiger Appeal to support his long-term care, enrichment, specialist diet and the ongoing development of his habitat, ensuring he has everything he needs to thrive for years to come.
By supporting Aqua's Rescue Tiger Appeal, you're helping to provide a brighter future for one remarkable tiger while supporting our commitment to conservation.
