Asian short-clawed Otters

Scientific name: Aonyx cinereus

Asian small-clawed otters are the smallest of all 13 otter species and are native to Asia. Well adapted to life in the water, these social, intelligent animals spend a majority of their time on land.

These otters have dark brown fur above and lighter fur below, often with gray, white, or cream-colored markings on the face and throat. They have webbed feet, and true to their name, their claws do not extend beyond their digital pads.

These little otters have thick, insulating fur made from short hairs kept clean and healthy by their constant grooming. Their tails are long giving them propulsion when swimming and steering and balance when standing upright on land. Unlike other otters, the Asian short-clawed otter has feet that are only partly webbed which gives them more dexterous paws.

These otters form monogamous pairs for life!
