National Curriculum based ideas

Liven up your lessons with a hands-on school trip which teaches the following areas plus many more (see KS1 and KS2 workshops):

  • Life cycles
Illustrate the processes and stages of animal reproduction while handling newly hatched baby chicks. Discuss the reasons why organisms need to reproduce, while learning about our endangered South American tarmarin monkeys and how a captive breeding programme can help them.

  • Animal variation and classification
With a wide variety of animals to see and experience ‘hands-on’, children can be taught about the differences between animals (mammals, reptiles, birds, insects etc), and how to group and sort animals according to visual characteristics (four legs, no fur, wings etc). Children can handle rabbits and guinea pigs, and hand feed some of the bigger animals like the goats, llamas, deer and camels.

  • Habitats
Children can also explore the farm to identify and observe the many different natural British habitats such as the ponds, fields, trees, hedges, flower beds and grassy areas. Discussions can take place about how to provide habitats for animals from abroad such as the new South African rhinos.

  • Food chains
Some of our exotic animals (monkeys, meerkats, storks…) have fascinating diets, eating crickets, meal worms, dead baby chicks, or vegetation.
