Helmeted Guinea Fowl
They are called Helmeted Guinea Fowl after the bony lump on their heads and side wattles.
Guinea Fowl are originally from the Guinea coast of Africa. There are 7 species of Guinea Fowl, which are in the Numididae Family.
They are found mainly in semi-arid areas and also in forests. They have one mate only in the nesting season, but outside that they gather in large groups of up to 2,000. Small groups have been seen walking 20-30 miles while looking for food.
Guinea Fowl (sometimes called Gleanies) have been kept on this farm for about 10 years (and were kept by Mr Bush’s Grandmother 60 years ago). They are good at giving an alarm call when they see intruders, especially foxes.
Guinea Fowl males and females look alike. The females will lay 10-20 eggs in their nesting season.
Other wild species are the Black, White-breasted (endangered), Vulturine, Tufted, and Kenya Crested Guinea Fowl.
