Owls’ eyes do not rotate in their sockets, instead they can turn their head 360 degrees
These birds are nocturnal hunters, waiting on a high perch at night before silently swooping down on their prey. They mainly eat mammals, such as rats, mice, rabbits and skunks, as well as small birds, including smaller owls.
Unlike human hearing, Owls have a sort of depth perception to their hearing, above and beyond “louder is closer”. This is possible because owl ears are not placed in the same position on either side of their head: the right ear is typically set higher in the skull and at a slightly different angle. By tilting or turning their head until the sound is the same in each ear, the owl can pinpoint both the direction and precise distance to the source of a sound.
Owls feathers are specially designed to be soft and silent in flight so that other sounds can still be heard.
Owls have a special digestive system with no crop. They swallow their prey whole, it passes straight to the gizzard where bones and indigestible parts are compressed into a pellet called a cast which they spit out of their beaks!
