Although very common around the world as a pet, the Golden Hamster can only be found in a small area from Eastern Europe to West Asia in the wild.

They are an endangered species.

They are small, robust rodents with very short tails and belong to the Muridae or mouse and rat family.

Golden Hamsters have very baggy skin, with large cheek pouches which can store food to eat later. This is a useful adaptation as food may occur irregularly, but sometimes in great abundance.

They are nocturnal animals, rarely coming out from their burrows except when feeding at night.

The Golden Hamster is solitary by nature and can be aggressive towards other hamsters.

The female has 14-16 nipples, and gestation lasts only 16 days. The number of young averages six or seven, although litters of 15 young have been recorded.
