Millie & Marcus

The name marmoset is thought to come from the French word for ‘grotesque figure’!

farm-april-022-1.jpgMarmoset teeth are very sharp and are used to bite trees to extract the gum or sap.

Hand reared Marmosets can become fearless of humans and then more dangerous as they can bite very hard and not let go. When they reach maturity they can become unpredictable and can even turn on their keeper. They are not to be recommended as pets.

Marmosets and Tamarins are very similar, coming from the same family of 38 species and are New World Monkeys (of which there are 85 species). The main difference between them is their teeth. Tamarins have long canine teeth, so can inflict a worse bite than Marmosets, which have incisors the same length as their canines.

They become mature for breeding at 16-25 months; gestation is 150 days.
