Highland are a popular breed of Scottish beef cattle.
They thrive in the colder climate of the North. They have recently become popular in the south for their shaggy good looks.
They are hardy grazers - they will eat a wide range of vegetation unpalatable to most cattle, live out in all seasons and weathers, and have a long breeding life.
The cattle are experts at improving unproductive land and maintaining a balance of plants. They will thrive on rough fodder enabling less competitive grasses and flowers to flourish.
The thick coat protects against the harshest of climates, the dossan (or fringe) deters flies and insects whilst the horns are defensive weapons for protecting a calf or sparring for a place in the fold.
