Wild tigers in India are poached for their fur and for their bones and teeth which are used in traditional oriental medicine. They are also hunted by farmers when they pose a threat to livestock.
Tigers are strictly meat eaters. They prey mainly on deer, wild boar, water buffalo and antelope which are found in the tiger’s natural habitat. Their feeding style is "feast or famine". They gorge themselves, often consuming 18-20 kg (40-60 lbs) of meat at one time as they may not be successful hunting again for several days.
Tigers prey on the most vulnerable animals in a herd, so they attack and kill the slowest animal then drag the carcass to a safe location to consume it.
