Owls have a special digestive system. They swallow their prey whole. It passes straight to the gizzard, where bones and indigestible parts are compressed into a pellet, which they spit out of their beaks.
Owls have forward-facing eyes to focus on prey and determine distance, but their eyes are light sensitive for hunting in the dark. Barn Owls have a special skull with different sized ear holes for detecting prey by sound alone in total darkness. Owl feathers are soft and silent in flight enabling them to catch their prey unawares.
