- The rhinoceros is the second largest land mammal, after the elephant.
- They weigh up to 4 tonnes.
- Rhinos are related to the Baluchitherium, the largest land mammal that ever lived. It was 18 feet tall, 36 feet long and lived in prehistoric times.
Just like elephants are hunted for their tusks, Rhinos are killed for their horns.
The horn of a Rhinocerous is made of Keratin, the same substance that human fingernails are made of. This Keratin is used extensively in traditional Asian medicine, and also to make ornamental dagger handles in the Yemen.
Demand for Rhino horn is so great that traders will pay poachers vast sums of money to kill Rhinos.
The hunting of rhinos has reduced the global population of wild Rhinos to just 21,000.
