Hedgerows
Hedges surround the edges of fields and mark boundaries so that animals can not escape or get in. They are inhabited by many birds, mammals and insects, and are also important for plants. Our hedges are maintained so that there is always enough shelter and food for any organisms that live there. They are maintained by annually trimming the hedges, encouraging new shoots to develop and making the hedge thicker at the base and of a reasonable height. On the edge of fields birds and insects can hide and nest there, and some insects and spiders over-winter at the edge of fields, so that in the spring they can come out and eat any pests.
